PROJECT HOPE AWARDS $72,000 IN LOCAL GRANTS
Project Hope awarded $72,000 to area health organizations, thanks to the success of the 2009 Festival of Hope fundraiser. Grants include:
- "Promoting Healthy Lifestyles for Free Clinic Patients" ($19,000)
Funding will help provide treatment, education and screenings through the Antone Tannehill Good Samaritan Free Clinic for the "working uninsured" in Lee County. - NMMC Diabetes Assistance Fund ($14,000)
Funding will provide assistance with diabetes self-management education and diabetes testing supplies for patients who qualify. The fund is administered through the Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi. - NMMC Cancer Center Patient Assistance Fund ($10,516)
Funding will provide assistance with medications, transportation and nutritional supplements to patients who qualify. The fund is administered through the Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi. - Weston Reed Cardiovascular Conference ($6,000)
Funding will assist with free CPR certification, training in the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and screening for diabetes. - NMMC Heart Patient Assistance Fund ($5,000)
Funding will provide assistance with medications, educational materials, transportation and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation to patients who qualify. The fund is administered through the Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi. - Sisters Network, Tupelo Chapter ($5,445)
Funding will assist with prevention and diagnosis of breast cancer among medically under-served African-American women. The funding will cover baseline screenings, diagnostic mammograms and ultrasound examinations. - Tree of Life "Arbon de la Vida" Free Clinic ($3,000)
Funds will assist individuals with heart disease and diabetes who have no health insurance and limited resources by providing in-stock medications free of charge. - Camp Hopewell ($2,510)
Funding will provide assistance for 6- to 8-year-olds living with Type 1 diabetes, educating them to control diabetes with a positive, healthy approach. - HealthWorks! North Mississippi ($2,529)
Funding will be used for equipment needed to add functional fitness programming designed to decrease risk for heart disease, cancer and diabetes through improved health habits. - Camp Breathe Ezzzze ($2,000)
Funding will assist with an asthma camp for children age 6-12 at Tishomingo State Park. Sponsored by NMMC, the camp educates children about managing asthma, as well as the importance of regular exercise and healthy habits to prevent future cardiopulmonary disease. - My Duty Outreach Ministries Inc. ($2,000)
Funds will be used to provide diabetes education classes and medical referral contact information for community residents.
